Beret tales

I finished the beret. My head measures 22", so I decided to make the larger size (22.5") and do an extra round of decreases, which should have made it fit. And I was on gauge. But I think one has to make the beret significantly smaller than one's head measurement.. anyway, the 19" would have fit. The one I made, well..

It looks vaguely "hobo cute," I'll concede (sorry about the photo quality, it was dark this morning), but if I move as much as an inch, it slides off. :-)

I have enough yarn to make another one in 19". So the question is, should I felt this to size (I think this yarn will felt just fine), or find someone who might like it with a bigger head? I think my head is not small, but.. head size is just not one of those things you stand around and compare with others, so who knows?

Bwah ha ha! I read this immediately after standing around the kitchen measuring the heads of my family. Maybe normal people don't stand around and compare their head measurements, but …

Big Hair.

I for one think the beret suits you perfectly, you look so great in it! Beautiful work!

Gosh! Felting it would be tempting for me although I'm would be afraid that the little cute floppy way it looks might go away since I don't know how much stiffer and smaller it will wind up. I dunno, I just if you just did a slight felt? interesting project--please let us know what you decide.

I'm starting to get an idea of what you looked like as a child. Too cute. And too big. Bummer. After the amazing expansion of my silky merino/somewhat cowl I'm beginning to suspect that I will never, ever manage to knit something that fits me. 7 swatches I did. Seven!!!

Ps. I think the Big Hair is a great suggestion.

Hmmm, like Jae, I'd think felt it but would also worry about it losing it's "floppiness". I think I'd see if it fit someone else and knit yourself the smaller one. It is cute, though.

When I made my second Center Square hat from Knitty, I found out that it did not fit me very well so I gave it away to a friend. Seeing that you already have enough to make another one for yourself, I would say giving this one away isn't too bad.

Won't it fit Rob? ;) I'm sure he'd look very jaunty. Or make a kitty bed out of it!

Read your Grasslimb mail, ya dingbat.

So what is this 'felt' you speak of? Honest, I have no idea, but I'm guessing it may require a mangle?

And what's wrong with elastic? You'd get a nice frill effect.

Felt! Felt! Felt! Hm, when I write that more than once it starts to look dirty. Past tense dirty. Weird.

Anyway, felted things are cool, and you *have* been looking for an excuse to do 17 loads of laundry in hot water, right?

I'd try felting it a bit. By hand, though, and a good stiff blocking when done.
